Summary: Two new Biblical films investigate Israel’s ark of the covenant and the spiritual realm of angels and demons.
And he [Josiah] said to the Levites who taught all Israel and who were holy to the LORD, “Put the holy ark in the house that Solomon the son of David, king of Israel, built. You need not carry it on your shoulders. Now serve the LORD your God and his people Israel. – 2 Chronicles 35:3 (ESV)
What Happened to the Ark of the Covenant?
From time to time we like to give updates on our projects or alert you to new releases from other groups that should thrill anyone interested in the Bible, history, and archaeology. Today we have exciting news of two new films. First up, we are delighted to announce that Legends of the Lost Ark, a new film from Gesher Media, is coming to theaters next month! The feature-length film about the Ark of the Covenant will be shown in USA theaters on April 12, 14 and 15. Tickets for Legends of the Lost Ark are available online now and at participating theatre box offices.
Moses was commanded to build the ark of the covenant at Mount Sinai, and as the representation of God’s presence among his chosen people, it was placed in the holy of holies, the most sacred inner sanctum of the tabernacle. Also called the ark of the testimony, a copy of the law was placed inside, and from it God would meet with Moses.
There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark of the testimony, I will speak with you about all that I will give you in commandment for the people of Israel. – Exodus 25:22
The ark went before the Israelites on their journey to the Promised Land, and had a long history in Canaan, including being briefly stolen by the Philistines, before being placed in Solomon’s temple. The Bible’s last mention of the ark in Israel comes during the reign of Judah’s King Josiah (see the top verse), about 35 years before the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the temple by the invading Babylonians.
At that point, knowledge of one of the Old Testament’s greatest relics was lost, yet other Jewish writings and legends from other sources speak of the ark’s fate. Do any of these hold the secrets to the true story of the ark?

About the Film
Blending cutting-edge technology, immersive reenactments, and rigorous academic scholarship, Legends of the Lost Ark reexamines the ancient artifact believed to embody the very presence of God. Directed by Stephen Pettit and hosted by Biblical archaeologist Dr. Chris McKinny, the film follows McKinny on a global investigation that at times feels like a real-life Indiana Jones expedition — grounded not in fiction but in archaeological research and historical inquiry. The film received the 2025 Silver Crown Award for Best Limited Theatrical Release at this year’s ICVM (International Christian Visual Media) meeting.

One aspect that sets Legends of the Lost Ark apart from past ark explorations is its cinematic superiority. Filmed across multiple countries with a 200-person crew and more than 100 cast members, it delivers a large-format documentary experience built for the big screen. Director Stephen Pettit, whose credits include productions for National Geographic, Discovery, Columbia Pictures, Amazon MGM Studios, Showtime, and BYUtv, assembled the ambitious production to do justice to the mystery at its center. See more information at the film’s website.
Another aspect that sets Legends of the Lost Ark apart is that it combines the adventure of investigating one of history’s greatest mysteries with top level academic credibility. For the first time, three enduring legends surrounding the Ark’s disappearance are scrutinized through textual analysis, archaeological exploration, and expert theological debate.

The film chronicles archaeologist Dr. Chris McKinny’s search for the ark supported by insights from scientists, historians, and Biblical scholars. McKinny has a PhD from Bar-Ilan University where he studied Biblical studies and Bronze and Iron Age archaeology of the southern Levant. His dissertation dealt with the historical geography of the town lists of Judah and Benjamin in the book of Joshua. McKinny is a staff member at the Tel Burna Archaeological Project and the Ackerman Family Bar-Ilan University Expedition to Gath. His publications include studies in historical geography, archaeology, Biblical history, Biblical chronology, and digital archaeology.
Through cinematic reenactments, the film vividly portrays the prophet Jeremiah’s desperate mission to safeguard the Ark during Jerusalem’s fall to Babylon in 586 BC, placing audiences inside a pivotal moment in Biblical history.
“The Ark was not only lost — its story and significance have largely been forgotten,” said Dr. McKinny. “What happened to the Ark remains one of the most fascinating mysteries in human history. This film charts new territory in investigating the most ancient legends surrounding its disappearance.”
Produced by Gesher Media and presented in partnership with Myriad Pictures, Legends of the Lost Ark comes to audiences from Fathom Entertainment, the leading specialty distributor of content to theatrical partners worldwide. An incredible visual journey into the fate of the ark, this unique film will entertain as well as inform. Along the way we discover the Ark’s true Biblical significance, from its creation to its disappearance, and its relevance to both ancient Israel and the modern world. More information can be found at the film’s website.
